Mercer county has an opening for a Court Reporter. This is a full-time position, 35 hours per week. The salary range is $34,481 to a top end of $48,352. Additional income is earned by processing court orders and transcripts. Starting salary is dependent upon experience. There is a comprehensive benefit package included. An RPR status is preferred, but not required. Mercer County pays for required continuing education as well as association memberships. A steno writer, laptop, and Case CATalyst software are also provided by Mercer County.
OVERALL OBJECTIVES
To stenographically record verbatim all court proceedings and transcribe a variety of hearings, as required by law; to prepare and process court orders, transcripts, and other related court proceedings with a high degree of speed and accuracy. The position works with confidential and sensitive information, requiring discretion and strict confidentiality.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Stenographically reports verbatim the testimony in all court proceedings of the Court of Common Pleas, including trials, hearings, and conferences; interrupts when necessary to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the record; reads back portions of proceedings upon request.
- Transcribes, certifies, and files a variety of proceedings as required by law or statute with the appropriate filing offices.
- Prepares court orders, sentences, Findings of Fact, and other courtroom documents as required by the Common Pleas judges.
- Operates stenographic shorthand machine, computer, and various other standard office equipment.
- Provides a monthly list of pending transcripts to the Lead Reporter.
- Maintains record of transcript status; bills appropriate parties; delivers transcripts to the judges, attorneys, and other designated agencies or departments, as required.
- Follows standard procedures.
- Secures and maintains exhibits for storage, retrieval, and disposal, when appropriate.
- Ensures that adequate supplies are maintained.
- Determines correct spelling of names of parties and witnesses.
- Is familiar with any specialized, medical, and/or legal terminology, and other specifics of testimony.
- Must attend training, seminars, and conferences to maintain continuing education, as required.
- Must abide by the Code of Conduct of the Unified Judicial System.
- Must abide by the Rules Governing Court Reporting and Transcripts pursuant to Pennsylvania Rules of Judicial Administration 4001 through 4016.
- Must abide by the Mercer County Local Rules regarding court reporters and transcripts, as applicable.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position reports to the President Judge, any Common Pleas Court judge to whom assigned, and to the District Court Administrator, and occasional and limited direction from the Lead Reporter. Receives limited instruction or supervision in carrying out routine day to day tasks.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those the employee
encounters while performing the essential functions of the position. A Court Reporter works indoors on a regular basis, in an office with minimal environmental factors, with adequate workspace, in adequate temperatures, ventilation, and lighting; and normal exposure to noise, disruptions, and stress; and normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt.
PHYSICAL/ MENTAL CONDITIONS
- Must possess ability to record, convey, assemble, and present information; explain procedures; and follow instructions.
- Must be able to sit for long periods throughout the workday with intermittent periods of standing, walking, bending, twisting, and reaching necessary to carry out job duties.
- Dexterity requirements range from coordinated movements of fingers/hands to simple movements of feet/legs and torso necessary to carry out job duties.
- Sedentary work, with occasional lifting/carrying of objects with a maximum weight of twenty pounds.
- Must be able to pay close attention to details and concentrate on court proceedings, testimony, and other work for long periods of time.
- At normal risk for repetitive stress injuries consistent with a job of this type.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/TRAINING
High School diploma or equivalent and a Degree or Certificate in Court Reporting from a court reporting program of higher education; computer and stenographic skills required. Must meet the requirements listed in Rule 4004 – Qualifications of Court Reporters, PA Rules of Court.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Prior court reporting experience is a plus but is not required.

The New York State Unified Court System (UCS) is in need of court reporters. To meet growing demands and to show our commitment to the profession of court reporting, we have modified our qualifications for employment to make it seamless for candidates to transition into becoming an official court reporter with our courts.
The UCS has created a new title, Court Reporter – Trainee, specifically aimed at recruiting candidates immediately upon completion of a formal program in court reporting. Candidates now qualify by earning their associate degree in Court Reporting and/or court reporting certification from a qualifying program that demonstrates, among other requirements, machine shorthand skills of 225 wpm as a result of passing two or more Q&A exams.
This position is designed for recent graduates new to the court reporting profession and will provide candidates the opportunity to develop their skills methodically, under the supervision and direction of supervising court reporters and court managers. Upon successfully completing a one-year traineeship, the candidate will be promoted to the full title of Court Reporter, with a two-paygrade increase.

- Read portions of transcript during trial at the request of the Judge or attorneys.
- Visually identify speakers in the Courtroom for the record.

- Prepare accurate transcripts in the format required by the Court; proofread and certify transcripts.

- Possess knowledge of the contents of the record; assist others in obtaining specific references from the official record.
- Prepare judgment entries.
- File verdict forms, provide copies of verdict forms if specifically requested.
- Mark exhibits in the Courtroom; carefully index, store and file exhibits until the conclusion of the trial (except for exhibits from not guilty verdict for criminal cases).
- Complete inventory sheet of exhibits upon conclusion of the trial; meet with the Evidence Administrator to verify and transfer evidence. Return money admitted as evidence to Prosecutor.
- File and maintain electronic notes in an orderly and secure manner; retain and destroy notes according to the approved schedule of retention and disposition.
- File and maintain computerized transcripts.
- Ensure equipment utilized is maintained in good operating condition; recommend the purchase of supplies and equipment as needed.
- Complete daily time sheets; generate monthly production report; pay monthly CAT fees; maintain and submit monthly CAT fee reports to Court Administrator.
- Provide coverage for other Court Reporters who are ill or on vacation.
- Meet regularly with Court Administrator and/or Deputy Court Administrator.
- Operate FTR equipment/rewrite recorded hearings as necessary and transcribe when requested.
- Determine Court Reporter coverage of prior court proceedings; furnish estimates to counsel and the public when requested.
- Maintain confidentiality of settlement agreements and court ordered seal documents.
- Other related duties that may become necessary or as directed by supervisor.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and diploma; or Courtroom and/or freelance experience as a Court Reporter.
- Registered Professional Reporter certification highly preferred. Must be obtained by completion of probationary period (within six (6) months of hire date).
- Must maintain continuing education necessary to retain license or continuing education equal to that of license requirements.

Salary: $99,365- $119,237
The United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, Boston, has an opening for an Official Court Reporter. Official Court Reporters serve at the pleasure of the Court and must comply with the requirements of the Judicial Conference of the United States, The Court Reporter's Manual published by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, and the policies of the Clerk's Office. Periodic travel to Worcester and Springfield divisional offices is required.
The Official Court Reporter records verbatim testimony by computer Assisted Technology (CAT) for civil and criminal court proceedings and provides Real Time reporting services. At the request of a party or by order of the Court, the court Reporter provides transcripts within the time frames and cost requirements of the Judicial Conference. Additionally, Court Reporters are responsible for determining that billings and formats comply with Judicial Conference requirements.
Court Reporters must adhere to the requirements of the Court's Court Reporters Management Plan of this District and maintain accurate, legible records which are subject to audits. This position involves completing record-keeping forms, documenting the information contained in reports, as well as maintaining and safeguarding records until their disposition according to statutory requirements and Judicial Conference policy.
Minimum Requirements:
- At least four years of prime stenographic CAT court reporting experience in the freelance field of service or in other courts or a combination thereof.
- Qualification by testing for listing on the Registry of Professional Reporters of the National Court Reporters Association or passed an equivalent qualifying examination. The National Stenomask Verbatim Reporters Association examinations and the Certified Shorthand reporters examinations required by some state governments may be acceptably equivalent to the National Court Reporters Association testing.
- A Certificate of Merit from the National Shorthand Reporters Association, a requirement for Leval II through Leval V (level V available only to court reporter's hired prior to October 11, 2009).
- Realtime Court Reporter experience, demonstrated proficiency and access to CAT transcription equipment.
- Successful completion of the Certified Realtime Reporter Examination offered by the National Court Reporters Association or having passed an equivalent qualifying examination is preferred.
- Supply of all necessary personal equipment and software (e.g. computer, a display, write, cable and Realtime software).

- Produces and distributes copies of documents in accordance with applicable Rules, law and Court policy
- Maintains log(s) or notes of all speakers and events, noting all occurrences such as unusual terms, names, objections, and cross-examinations.
- Determines correct spelling of names, terminology and other specifics of testimony by inquiring of court participants and examining case files.
- Sets up and maintains electronic recording equipment, conducts system sound checks and tests to ensure proper functioning in accordance with Court policy;
- Maintains recording media, log sheet and other supplies inventories.
- Consults with the Court Administrator regarding invoicing for transcription services of Court Proceedings, court orders and other legal hearings, in accordance with applicable Rule, law or Court policy.
- Labels and tracks case exhibits during Court Proceedings; maintains proper order of exhibits submitted as evidence in Court Proceedings; file exhibits in appropriate place at completion of case.
- Consults with the Court Administrator regarding equipment, software, other machinery and supplies used in daily work assignments;
- Identifies when equipment is not in proper working order; when repairs to equipment are necessary, including minor repairs; makes recommendations regarding needed equipment, supplies, software and repairs.
- Swears in witnesses (as needed) involved in Court Proceedings during non-jury hearings and trials; adheres to all county, state and federal laws and regulations.
- Delivers transcripts through electronic means or hard copy to Judge, attorneys or parties, the appropriate filing office, and other authorized individuals or entities, in accordance with Court policy and applicable Rules and law.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
- Types and prepares various correspondence including, but not limited to, letters, legal documents, memoranda, reports and other documents; reviews information for accuracy and completeness; makes corrections and additions as needed; enters information into computer databases as necessary; maintains copies for departmental files and future reference as needed.
- Understands and displays appropriate courtroom decorum.
- Consults with the Court Administrator regarding continuing education and training needs.
- Works collaboratively with other members of the department as well as other colleagues and employees of the Court and County.
- Appropriately directs questions and inquiries. Exhibits collegial working relationship with court participants.
- Exhibits willingness and ability to adapt to change.
- Able to work in an environment with varying levels of authority.
- Able to work independently and with minimal supervision; able to exercise discretion and exhibit problem-solving skills.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the District Court Administrator and President Judge, or her/his designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year of practical experience in an administrative, professional, governmental, legal or judicial setting; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities for this position. Requires an understanding of recording equipment, or the ability to quickly develop an understanding of recording equipment, and the ability to correct routine malfunctions. Requires adequate hearing acuity, ability to insist on clarity of Recordings, proficiency in note taking, and an understanding of courtroom procedures and vocabulary.
